Baccarat Strategy, Rules & General Overview

Baccarat is a casino card game that is usually dealt from a shoe (card holder) that contains 8 decks of cards in some rare cases the casino may use a 6 deck shoe, which does not effect the play of the game.  Baccarat comes in two main versions Big Baccarat and Mini Baccarat. Big Baccarat is often used to describe the game that is often found in abundant surroundings in a part of the casino that is apart from the noisy hustle and bustle of the main activity. Up to fourteen players different can be seated at the huge Big Baccarat table. Three dealers watch the Big Baccarat game which is also sometimes referred to as Full Baccarat. One of the dealers supervises play making sure the cards are drawn and played properly.  That dealer also announces the winning side while the two other dealers are mainly responsible for settling players bets.

Minimum bets in Big Baccarat are generally higher and the game often attracts high rollers which brings the excitement of the game to a whole new level. Big Baccarat is dealt from the shoe which is passed around the table from one player to the other. Each player has the option of accepting the shoe and acting as the dealer or the “Bank” or he can pass the shoe to the next player. Even when a player is acting as the Bank, they still have the option of betting on Player or Banker.

Mini Baccarat is another popular version of the game which moves a faster rate and is played at a smaller table that fits up to 8 players. In Mini Baccarat, the players never touch the cards. The game is controlled by only one dealer who is responsible for everything that goes on it the game including dealing calling and settling bets. Minimum bets at the Mini Baccarat table are usually lower than Big Baccarat and can be as little as $5 but normally minimum in most casinos is $10. At most online casinos, you can find bets of as little as  $1.

Out of all casino games baccarat is probably the easiest to play since there are only 3 possible bets that can be made. You can bet on the Banker, the Player or you can bet that they will tie with each other. The winning side is the side that completes its hand with a total closest to 9. A winning bet placed on Player pays even money but a winning bet for the dealer pays even less the commission for the house. The reason for the house getting commission on the Banker wins is because of the designated hitting rules that govern play.  The Banker has a slight advantage over the Player side. If there wasn’t a tax, one could bet on the banker all the time and come out ahead in the end. A lot people approach the game as if the Player and Banker have an equal chance of winning. Don’t forget the a be can also be put on the circle that says Tie.  If the banker and the Player tie and it pays 8 to 1, the downside is that when this bet is placed the house has a bigger advantage.

When you start to play baccarat, the dealer is dealt two cards and the Player is dealt two cards both facing up and the totals for both of their hands are equaled. The cards take their face value except for tens and face cards which are valued at zero and Aces have a value of 1.  After the value of the cards is known the play continues, if either one of the participants has a natural (which means 2 cards that total 8 or 9), then play stop immediately and that side wins. However if neither one of the participants has a natural play goes on.  The player is always asked first whether they want to hit or stand.  If the player has a hand of two cards that total 0-5 they must take another card, if the total is 6-9 the player should stand.  There can not be more than three cards for either the Player or the Banker.  This is a game that really looks difficult at first but after you get out there and start playing then it becomes easy. When you play this game you are expected to keep your own score at land-based casinos.  The casino will give you a score card and a pen or pencil.  At online casinos, this is done for you.

Many people have developed or follow strategies while playing.  The following are some of the more popular strategies that many people use to help their game. One that is seen a lot around Baccarat tables is called Flagship or Time Before Last. This is a very simple strategy, you bet on the side that won before the last one. The reason that this is so popular the thought is that the show goes through cycles where there will be hits for one side over the other. Sometimes players can begin to read cycles and switch baccarat and forth between banker and player. Follow the Leader is another popular way to play.  This again is very simple you bet on the side that one last, which sometimes works better than Flagship depending on the shoe.  Some of the most popular methods are based on the idea that a normal random shoe will go through patterns in certain proportions and that there will be a certain number of decisions like player, then banker, then player again. A winning hand in Baccarat depends on the hand that you bet on and whether or not that hand wins. One of the tricky parts to this game that players usually take is the way that the cards are valued. Say a hand consists of an eight of clubs and a seven of diamonds. The point values are 8 and 7, so the total of the hand is 8 + 7 = 15. The "tens" portion of the total is ignored, the value of the hand is five, so this player has a total of five in their hand and can draw their third card.
